NoDs was formed to expose and facilitate creative initiatives on the domestic front- to bring people closer together in the process, and to examine the dry wall, brick, or concrete barriers between private and public space. Maybe even knocking some of them down on the way!
NoDs views every aspect of everyday living as a constituent part of the creative process and vice versa. This integration of creativity and living is at the core of the NoDS philosophy.
The House of In-Correction (HoI), joined with NoDS in early 2012 and has since hosted six artists/activists/academics-in-residence. The HoI is a sanctuary for dissidents, vagrants, tramps, and misfits. Through the use of communal meals, mutual aid, compassionate creativity, and soil and seed the HoI subverts the traditions of “norm” and works out the tensions between dominant culture and the Rêve Générale; the General Dream. Teaming up with Edmonton’s Weekly Collective—a platform for emergency creativity and solidarity in the face of doubt, cynicism, and fear—the Artist in Residence (A.I.R) program is situated between the two operations like a superglue handshake.
At the House we value creative tactics of re-interpreting and re-performing the role of civilian. We are building, collaboratively, an inclusive and participatory social practice where we challenge cultural and systemic hegemony. At the HoI, we welcome applicants who are like-minded and who work with care and sensitivity within the context of community. We ask that applicants be aware of how their work affects communities and, furthermore, hope that they intend their work to positively affect their own or other communities. We want to make art that supports positive social, political, and personal development if not outright transformation! We welcome work that is challenging, political, anti-oppressive, and positive. You do not need to be a professional or self-professed ‘artist’ to apply, so please don’t let this term deter you!
